I’ve spent a lot of time working on a new installation model that will enable users to install MarcEdit either as an administrator (for use by all users on a machine) and as a non-administrator (available only to the user that installed the program). The second thing that you need to know is that the alpha and beta versions don’t require administrative privileges to install. By dropping XP, I’ve been able to move the tool into a direction that I doubt would have been possible - so while I regret any inconvenience this might cause, it’s necessary for the future development of the application. I’ve spent a little over a year letting folks know that this was coming, and will keep the 6.3.x branch alive and available for users that are unable to update, but technically, it’s become too difficult to continue to support a system that was released almost 15 years ago (Windows XP). Please be aware, this is a big change…a breaking change for some people. In fact, I’m technically only supporting Windows 7-10, but the program will run on any system that has. First, MarcEdit 7’s system requirements are very different than MarcEdit 6.x. Ok, if you’ve gotten this far on the page and are still interested in playing with software that is very much in development, there’s a few things that you need to know. Sure, there’s a lot of work left to be done, but there is a lot of work that is finished. You’ll find the new clustering tools, new XML processing tools, new tools integrated into the ILS toolkits. You’ll find new accessibility options in the form of themes and new data translations. Better Installation process (Installers that work with and without administrator privileges)Īnd in many ways, you will see a lot of these things in MarcEdit 7.Improved Linked Data tools and processes.Better tools for dealing with dirty data.Better Interactive support in the command-line, scripting, or task management.Integrate many of the bolt on tools added in MarcEdit 6.Increase performance across all aspects of the Tool.Make the Tool more accessible for all users. In creating MarcEdit 7, I had a couple of very simple goals: ![]() At the same time, over a year’s worth of work has gone into the creation of this new version, and it’s time to make it available. ![]() In fact, there are a number of places, where this is really not finished software. Stone facades over a post, decorative ceilings and even luxurious railings are common finish options people are willing to pay more for. Every part of your screened deck can become more expensive depending on the finish you choose. Expect a gas or electric fireplace to come with the additional cost of electrical wiring or gas hookup. Bob Vila reports the average outdoor fireplace costs around $3,000, but the cost range for installation is $1,500 to $20,000. Instead of a heater, you may like the idea of having an outdoor fireplace. "The typical outdoor kitchen setup is going to be $15,000-plus, easy," Moylan says. For many, outdoor living is not complete without having a kitchen setup to take outdoor cooking beyond the grill. Retractable screens that run on a motor are estimated to cost $2,000 to $4,000 per unit, according to HomeAdvisor. Plenty of homeowners like the option of a screened-in porch, but want to be able to raise the screens as well. "For two heaters you're spending $4,000-$5,000 on the heating system," Moylan says. If you have more than a simple light or fan, Moylan says you'll need a circuit added to your electrical panel. You'll need electricity in your screened porch if you want a fan, TV, heaters or other features that will make your outdoor living space more pleasant. ![]() For a 200-square-foot porch, that’s $800 on the low end and $6,000 on the high end. The cost of a roof or cover for your screen porch depends on the material – $4-$9 per square foot for wooden shakes, $14-$22 for an aluminum cover and $16-$30 for asphalt shingles, according to HomeAdvisor. "We tell customers to pick out three colors that they like just in case the first one is not available – then they have a backup," Moylan says. Requiring even more wood is the deck you would need to build, if you don't already have a functioning porch with a roof. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case – though if you have a specific type of frame in mind, it’s best to ask your contractor if it will impact your timeline and total cost. During the coronavirus pandemic, lumber prices made the wood for screen framing more expensive and harder to obtain. However, there are also aluminum screens, costing $5-$7 per square foot, and solar screens, costing $5.50-$7 per square foot, according to Angi. Moylan says most screens used today are fiberglass, which runs between $4.50 and $5.50 per square foot not including the cost of labor, according to Angi. This adds time and money to the project to handle the administrative aspects, along with getting the architectural or engineering expertise needed to sign off on plans. Many local governments treat a screened porch with a roof as an addition to the home, and it must be approved and permitted as such. ![]() The availability of construction labor, population density and proximity to shipping or trucking hubs can all play a role in the bottom line of the project. Like many other home improvement projects, typical costs are heavily dependent on where you live. But it's the same usable square footage in the same space," Moylan says. "Once you start layering it, that's where you really see that massive price difference. Moylan describes the features and finishes you choose for your screened porch as a layering effect: You can get the bare structure with decking and screens, and then add flooring, ceiling, electrical wiring, gas hookup and more. If your screened porch has a balcony above it or the porch itself is on a second story, a more complex project will drive up the total cost. ![]() While the total square footage will affect the price, Moylan says the complexity of the project and materials are even more likely to impact the bottom line. “Making sure that it is in a good structural, sound place first is always step one.” Is your existing deck or porch solidly built and in good condition? “Especially if it’s an elevated deck of some kind, homeowners tend to forget to check the integrity and condition of their deck,” Hicks says. ![]() It was created by an engineering team in 1940 at the Galvin Manufacturing Company (forerunner of Motorola). The first device to be widely nicknamed a "walkie-talkie" was developed by the US military during World War II, the backpacked Motorola SCR-300. Gross, a radio engineer and one of the developers of the Joan-Eleanor system, also worked on the early technology behind the walkie-talkie between 19, and is sometimes credited with inventing it. Hings' model C-58 "Handie-Talkie" was in military service by 1942, the result of a secret R&D effort that began in 1940. In 2001, Hings received the Order of Canada for the device's significance to the war effort. He called the system a "packset", although it later became known as a "walkie-talkie". Canadian inventor Donald Hings was the first to create a portable radio signaling system for his employer CM&S in 1937. Probably the first patent owner (patent filled on, granted on 19 March 1936 ) was the engineer Henryk Magnuski from Poland, who later worked since 1939 on Motorola's first walkie-talkie (a hand-held radio transceiver SCR-536). Handheld two-way radios were developed by the military from backpack radios carried by a soldier in an infantry squad to keep the squad in contact with their commanders. The transceiver is normally in receive mode when the user wants to talk they must press a " push-to-talk" (PTT) button that turns off the receiver and turns on the transmitter. Multiple walkie-talkies use a single radio channel, and only one radio on the channel can transmit at a time, although any number can listen. A walkie-talkie is a half-duplex communication device. ![]() Typical walkie-talkies resemble a telephone handset, with a speaker built into one end and a microphone in the other (in some devices the speaker also is used as the microphone) and an antenna mounted on the top of the unit. First used for infantry, similar designs were created for field artillery and tank units, and after the war, walkie-talkies spread to public safety and eventually commercial and jobsite work.
